Playford Renal Dialysis Unit
A Human-Centred Environment for Renal Care
The Playford Renal Dialysis Unit has been thoughtfully designed to support the wellbeing of patients undergoing regular haemodialysis treatment, recognising that many spend several hours at a time within the facility. The design prioritises comfort, dignity and connection, creating an environment that feels welcoming and supportive rather than overtly clinical.
The 30-chair facility is organised around generous treatment spaces that provide patients with a greater sense of privacy and personal comfort while allowing family members and carers to remain close by. Abundant natural light and views to the surrounding trees and landscape help foster a calming atmosphere, strengthening connections to the outdoors and enhancing the overall treatment experience.
The unit accommodates both open and private treatment settings, supported by intuitive planning, clear wayfinding and accessible design principles that promote ease of navigation for patients, visitors and staff alike.
A key feature of the project is the integration of First Nations storytelling throughout the interior environment. Custom wall graphics and acoustic ceiling panels incorporate Indigenous artwork and cultural narratives, reflecting the landscapes and connections of Country. These elements transform functional building components into meaningful expressions of culture, embedding a sense of place and identity within the healthcare setting.
Equally important was the wellbeing of staff, with dedicated back-of-house and breakout spaces designed to provide moments of respite and support throughout the working day. The result is a contemporary healthcare environment that balances clinical excellence with human-centred design, delivering a positive experience for both patients and caregivers.
