Estia Burton

Estia Health Burton: Transforming under-utilised space into a high-yield 24-bed expansion with deep connection to landscape, proving aged-care environment with both functional and architectural resonance.

Through a strategic intervention of the existing footprint, this project focused on the adaptive reuse of under-utilised zones to increase site density and enhance the occupant experience. The brief required a seamless integration of 24 new residential suites while revitalising and extending the footprint of the core social infrastructure of the facility. The project was a successful conversion of redundant circulation spaces into high-value residential and communal assets.

Spatial strategy & Interior Architecture design replaces institutional monotony with a series of distinct social nodes. By employing a diverse material palette, ranging from the warmth of natural oak joinery to high-impact statement elements like the teal bistro island, the floor plan encourages intuitive wayfinding and social autonomy. A curated selection of textiles and finishes in rust, sage, and teal tones provides a domestic, "residential-plus" feel while meeting rigorous aged-care compliance and blending in the retained décor of some existing areas. Light & connectivity was the key architectural driver. The purpose-built activity zones and open-plan dining areas, prioritised acoustic comfort and visual connectivity. Strategic structural openings and expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing were utilised to dissolve the boundary between the internal communal hubs and the newly landscaped sensory gardens.
