Cancer Council SA Headquarters

Multi-level Mixed Use building comprising accommodation for remote and rural consumers that are in Adelaide to receive cancer treatment. Counselling services and new state headquarters for the CCSA.

This project amalgamates services that were previously housed on three separate sites. The Client’s brief required the provision of 120 visitor rooms (minimum) and integrated headquarters for CCSA. This included administration, support service functions, telephone fundraising, Counselling and research functions for the organisation.

The benefits of this consolidation are the long-term efficiency and sustainability of CCSA and improved quality and delivery of support services to patients and their families visiting the site from regional and remote South Australia.

The design took advantage of the building's location directly across from the parklands, with views to the city and the hills. All bedrooms have access to these views. The core focus was to provide a healing place that promotes wellbeing for both cancer patients, their families and the staff.

The facility includes common activity spaces, kitchens, lounges, library, reading room, gym, herb garden and a children’s area. These activities can provide a good distraction while providing a sense of normalcy for consumers.

The design of the building façade incorporates a combination of fair face red brickwork, light coloured wall panels and extensive aluminium and glass curtain walls to maximise natural light transmittance into all habitable areas. The communal areas include large courtyards/terraces with raised planting beds and gardens that enable interaction with nature. Technology has been integrated throughout the building to support Cancer Council SA’s activities which raise awareness and improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment research.
